Reduction mammoplasty refers to the procedure we perform as plastic surgeons to reduce the size of our patients’ breasts. It is typically sought by patients who wish to see their busts smaller, better positioned, or because they have associated symptoms such as back pain, infection in the breast folds, and deep grooves in the shoulders caused by the weight of the breast on the bra.

Breast explantation refers to the procedure we perform as plastic surgeons to remove breast implants and reconstruct the breast with the residual tissue. There are different reasons why a patient with breast implants would like to remove them. The most common reasons include: Asia syndrome, where the use of a foreign body, in this case, a breast implant, creates specific signs and symptoms that can cause physical and psychological discomfort in patients. Furthermore, repeated capsular contractures can lead a patient to desire breast explantation. In more extreme cases, conditions such as anaplastic giant cell lymphoma require such explantation. We cannot ignore the personal wishes of each patient; there are cases in which the patient simply, by autonomous decision, wishes to remove their breast implants.
